Vanilla Bean Equivalency to: Vanilla Extract Ground Vanilla Beans
1/4 Whole Vanilla Bean 1/4 tbsp 1/2 tbsp
1/2 Whole Vanilla Bean 1/2 tbsp 3/4 tsp
1 Whole Vanilla Bean 1 tbsp 1 1/2 tsp
Preparation
Cut from the whole bean the amount you need for the recipe. Split bean lengthwise with a sharp knife. Do not cut all the way through the bean; just enough pressure to slice through one side. Splay bean. With a knife or a spoon scrape the thousands of seeds from the bean husk.
Do not discard the husk as it still has much flavor. Chop, dice or use whole to make vanilla sugar or my favorite, vanilla syrup.
